Conference - Day One, Finale
We left the library conference area after dinner and headed over to the auditorium. It wasn't easy, but I was able to load my Power Point Presentation onto the available PC. The fonts did not render correctly, but there was no time to fix it.
Several Taiwanese student groups performed. They had a Taiwanese aboriginal group as well. This was especially cool since only 2% of the population is "native" to Taiwan. The other 98% are ethnic Han Chinese. The dance very much reminded me of ceremonial Native American rituals.
Our "performance" was well received. We were the first, so it was nerve racking and we had no chance to do a run through with the equipment before hand. People seemed to be interested in all of the things that originated in Buffalo. They loved the pictures of our families.
The Russians wore traditional costumes and danced. The Japanese did some calligraphy and martial arts demonstrations while the Australians performed a comedy routine. The Irish sang, read a poem, and played a few Irish songs on flute and piano. The delegation from Finland tried to teach people how to speak Finnish. The "party" lasted over three hours and we were all happy to go home with our host families to get some sleep.
Below is a picture I took of one of the postcards from the conference. There are posters, t-shirts, brochures, notepads, booklets, all with what you see for all of the students. Look and you'll see what I mean. It's pretty darn neat! The picture only has eight of the 21 heads. Can you figure out which one is Cliff, Kayla and Jimmitti?
Finally, several of the Taiwanese students did a great job performing by "cross-dressing" during the party. You'll see what a good job they did by looking at the pictures of one of the kids - his name is Sheldon and he was cross-dressing as Avril Lavigne.
